The holiest day of the Jewish year is the day of atonement, also an important feast day in Israel. The high priest went into the Holy of Holies in the Temple to ritually cleanse himself and Israel. One goat was sacrificed, and one was released to die in the wilderness, carrying away the sins of Israel. In the same way, Jesus’ death is the Church’s atonement for forgiveness of sin.
