The northern kingdom of Israel was conquered by Assyria in 721 BC. The southern kingdom of Judah withstood their invasion until the late 7th century BC. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, invaded Judah on three separate occasions and deported citizens to Babylon. But he finally destroyed Jerusalem in 587/86 BC, which was the third and final deportation. After this, Jerusalem lay in ruins and the people of Judah were scattered in a foreign land.
