They devise injustices, saying, “We have completed a well-planned plot.” Yes, man’s inward parts and heart are deep. But God will shoot an arrow at them. Suddenly they will be wounded.
Have you ever felt alone in standing for what’s right?
When I went to public school for one year—in sixth grade—I was sexually harassed. What started as a boy teasing me and playing with my hair from the desk behind mine in science class turned to butt-grabbing in PE and then, finally, culminated in him gyrating in my face while I sat against the wall in the gym, a group of my usual bullies—both male and female—laughing while they egged him on.
As a little 11-year-old who’d never been anything but respected by the boys I grew up with, I wasn’t about to stand for that. I went immediately to the sixth-grade principle and told him what happened. He asked if I would be brave enough to give my statement, and with my best friend standing beside me in the hall and my hackles still up, I said yes.
What came as a shock to me was the day I was called to give my statement to the officials. I was not alone in the room; more than a half-dozen female classmates had come forward to give a testimony against this boy, too. Apparently, it had been going on all year, but it wasn’t until one of us stood that the rest followed.
How often in contention do we feel we’re up alone against a giant? The sheer amount of wickedness around us can be breathtaking at times. This is another reason I adore the testimony of the psalms; it’s so plainly portrayed how even when a whole counsel of evildoers plots against us, we are not alone! We have support…it comes from God! His defense of us arises with such suddenness, the enemy doesn’t see it coming and is powerless to block it.
This is why doing right and putting our faith in God is paramount. Our circumstances can and should always be an opportunity to bring glory to Him…whether because they’re so wonderful they reflect Him, or so dire His deliverance from them will leave people shaking their heads, fearing the work of God and declaring His name!
So, if you feel alone on the righteous path, don’t lose heart. Remember it’s God who supports you, who strengthens you; and know that by your upright walk, you inspire others to ponder the wonderful work of your Heavenly Father. All glory and honor to Him, forever—amen!
