In early April 2024, many folks across a huge swath of the United States had their eyes on the sky for a long-anticipated solar eclipse. In Indiana, which was considered at the heart of the eclipse’s totality, businesses from grocery stores to posh boutiques were selling “2024 Solar Eclipse” merch for months. Small towns were struggling to make space for 20-30,000 forecasted visitors coming and going on that highly anticipated Monday, and in the days that led up to it.
Big signs and wonders draw a crowd—this has been the case for centuries. In fact, it was part of the reason why so many large groups, even thousands of people, showed up almost everywhere Jesus went! Humankind is hooked on the tremendous and undeniable: the dead being raised, the lame walking, or a solar eclipse turning day to night for a few minutes.
But how often do we look for the small signs? Are we just here for the big miracles or for the everyday movements of God, too? Are our hearts attuned to look for the less jaw-dropping yet no less powerful ways that the Lord works in our lives and in the world around us?
This week, we encourage you to be mindful and thankful for all movements of God that happen in both mundane and magnificent ways. Let’s pray that our hearts will be open to His leadership. May our hands and feet be ready to move how He directs us, so we can follow His will and show His power to those around us whenever the need arises.
